Your Lightspeed POS system can help you address sustainability in two main areas: using eco-friendly materials and inventory waste. By incorporating these practices into your business, you can save money and reassure your customers that they’re making an eco-friendly choice by visiting your store.

1. Go paperless
When it comes to environmental impact, paper receipts are literally deadly. A 2018 study found BPA or BPS— two chemicals that definitely don’t belong in the environment in high concentrations—in 93% of these receipts. And even those that don’t contain these substances are problematic; 18 billion liters of water, 25 million trees, and 22 million barrels of oil are used to create paper receipts each year worldwide.

To send your customers paperless receipts with Lightspeed, follow these steps:

Log in to Lightspeed Retail. From the main menu, click Settings > General Options.
In the General options, click Email. Complete the Reply-to email address from/to your store by entering their email address, and the Receipt email header and footer with what you want customers to see at the top and bottom of their digital receipt.
Then go to Settings > General Options > Printing and select Turn off automatic print reception.
After receiving payment for a sale, click “Received by Email.” If necessary, provide the customer’s name and email address.
2. Encourage take-out in-store or at the outdoor counter
So you’ve been selling online — and you’ve probably noticed that all those boxes and packing materials are seriously adding up. To make that packaging more sustainable, you can start investing in recycled materials and reduce your use of plastic or Styrofoam. You can also encourage local online shoppers to pick up their goods, saving you from having to use extra packaging.
