An SEO audit is not a matter of guesswork. As we often say, every aspect of your strategy needs to be based on key data. To get data, you need the best tools.
Some of the SEO audit tools we recommend are:
Semrush
One of the most popular SEO tools to date, Semrush has a nifty Site Audit feature that analyzes the overall health of a web page. It also has an on-page SEO checker that analyzes Google ranking factors and provides actionable recommendations to improve performance. It’s also useful for performing competitor analysis with its capabilities to monitor visibility and motorcycle owner email lists keyword rankings for multiple domains, as well as identify top-performing pages that drive organic traffic to competitor sites.
Ahrefs
The Ahrefs tool crawls all the pages and provides an SEO health score of the website. This tool has three key features: Keyword Explorer, Site Explorer, and Content Explorer. The best thing about this tool is that it provides visuals of the findings to make them easier to understand and analyze. Ahrefs is completely cloud-based, so you can log in anytime and audit websites on the go.
Screaming Frog
Screaming Frog is one of the most popular tools among SEO specialists due to its ability to analyze small and large websites. It is primarily a website crawler rather than an audit tool, but it is still useful for detecting potential SEO issues such as unoptimized meta titles and descriptions, broken links, duplicate content, and blocked robots.txt. We recommend this tool if you are auditing websites with up to 500 pages.
Why is it important to perform an SEO audit?
Although SEO audits can take many different forms, as the name suggests, they typically have one common end goal: to improve a website's presence and performance on Google and other search engines.
The way you can do this is by identifying problems and opportunities:
Problems that may have a detrimental effect on a website's performance in search engines (or may do so in the future).
Opportunities to improve a website's search engine performance.
All SEO agencies should conduct an in-depth review of your website before committing to any changes to the structure, content or off-page activity.
The technical health of your website is made visible and highlights key tasks that will improve online visibility.
An ongoing SEO plan can be designed to improve metrics such as sales and leads.
On-page issues can be resolved by improving the way search engines understand your website.
Create a better user experience.
Identify areas for improvement that will boost search visibility, putting your business in front of the right users.
Research what your competitors are doing or not doing.
How much does an SEO audit cost?
Whether you're the one selling audits to clients or looking to hire someone else to perform an audit, one of the first questions that often comes up is "how much does it cost?"
We have seen it all. From services for €10 to some costing thousands of euros. These are extremes and it is likely that neither of the two is the most suitable for most cases.
There is no simple formula for assigning a cost to audits. Costs will vary depending on the type of audit and what the individual client requires. But as with any engagement, the goal is to balance the value delivered to the client and making sure you are adequately rewarded for your time and resources.
Some SEOs produce audits based on a set of criteria (usually website size) and a predefined set of deliverables but most take a more tailored approach, calculating audit costs individually for each client.
There are pros and cons to both approaches. Standardized pricing provides a simpler “product” to advertise and for sales teams to sell. But to deliver the most value, we always recommend a tailored approach with scoping before agreeing on a price.
So, although there is no simple formula, the process (in theory) is straightforward:
Analyze what needs to be audited and the required deliverables
Estimate how long it will take
Cost = estimated resource required x daily rate
However, in practice, it's not that simple. For any type of audit, there are a wide range of factors that need to be taken into account, such as the size of the website, its structure, the technology used, the competitive landscape, legacy issues, the history of the site, and many more.
