The other day we stayed late at the office because there was a problem with the servers. “There’s a problem with the servers,” I said when I called home to say I wouldn’t be home for dinner. “Oh, wow, the servers these days don’t work as well as they used to, you better hire new people,” my mother replied. She was obviously not very clear on what a server is in IT .

And I'm sure there are many people who are not clear on this either. This post is for all of them.

What is a server?
In a technical sense, a server is an example of a computer program that accepts and responds to requests made by another program; known as a client. In a simpler definition, it is nothing more than a computer that japan phone number list services or resources to other computers.

A server is a specialized computer that is on a computer network. A server runs an operating system and server software. Services provided by servers include email, file sharing, Web, video streaming, and others.

How is a server different from any other type of computer?
A server differs from a normal computer in both the way it is built and the way it is used. Servers thus have a resilient architecture. For example, they contain two power supplies, two hard drives and other duplicate parts. So if one part breaks, the other remains working, giving engineers time to repair the fault.

Types of servers
There are different types of servers , specialized in different tasks. These are the main ones:

FTP Server: Provides secure file transfer between computers, while ensuring file security and transfer control.
Mail Server: Transfers and stores messages across LAN, WAN, and across the Internet.
Web server: Provides static content to a web browser by loading a file from disk and transferring it over the network to the user's web browser.
Application Server: Establishes a connection between two otherwise separate applications.
IRC Server: Internet Relay Chat comprises different network servers that allow users to connect to each other over an IRC network and chat.
