When The New York Times launched its TikTok on January 24, it started with “ hard news ” in a tone far removed from the accounts of other “serious” outlets dabbling in infotainment, featuring Brandon Tsay, the 26-year-old who disarmed a shooter at a dance hall in Alhambra, California. That’s a far cry from the Washington Post, which launched its account in May 2019 with a 15-second, viral skit featuring Sen. Cory Booker and Dave Jorgenson, a senior video reporter for the Post. The Times may be a few years behind other publishers (though it has TikTok verticals with NYT Cooking , Wirecutter , and the podcast Hard Fork ), but the wait to launch this account certainly doesn’t signal a lack of innovation.
