Meta has published a new wave of the Global State of Small Business report on the state of small businesses around the world. Based on the largest global survey of SME owners, conducted in January 2022 with almost 24,000 SME owners in 30 countries , this report serves to analyze the situation of small businesses worldwide and to get an idea of how they are evolving.

The report also points out that 27% of Spanish companies have reported an increase in their sales , 13 points more than in July 2021. More than half of Spanish SMEs (56%) are optimistic about the future of their businesses. Most have made a huge effort to stay afloat and many of them have had to accelerate their digitalisation and even change their business model to adapt to new consumer needs.
Digitalization and gender differences
Of those with a presence on Facebook, 38% say that at least 25% of their sales have been digital in the last month , a figure that exceeds countries such as Italy (30%), Germany (31%) and Ireland (36%). In neighbouring Portugal, for example, the percentage of SMEs that have increased their sales by at least 25% rises to 39%.
The survey also exposes a stark gender disparity at the local level . Women-owned businesses are 8% more likely to close compared to those owned by men, according to Meta’s Global State of Small Business study .
Spain follows this trend, with 23% of SMEs run by women reporting an increase in sales , compared to 28% of SMEs run by men. While Meta welcomes these local results, it says it remains committed to supporting SMEs and looking for new ways to make it easier for them to start their online businesses.
