The construction of the palace in the Quattrocento architectural style began in 1458. The building was founded by the banker Luca Pitti, who was a close friend and supporter of the founder of the Medici dynasty, Cosimo Medici. When Pitti began to have financial difficulties after the death of the old Medici, the construction of the palace was stopped. The banker himself died in 1472, without completing his palace.
