Leaf curl disease attacks Aman rice in Raninagar

Staff Reporter: In Raninagar, Naogaon, hundreds of bighas of paddy have died due to leaf blight (BLB) disease in Aman paddy. Even after the advice of the Agriculture Department, the paddy is not being saved from leaf blight disease. This has left the farmers disoriented. The farmers have sought advice and instructions from the uplift authority to save themselves from the damage.
It is known that Aman rice has been cultivated on 15,450 hectares of land in Raninagar Upazila for about one and a half months in the current season. The rice includes various varieties including Bina Seven, BR-49, BR-51, BR-52 and Atab. Fifteen days ago, Aman rice plants suddenly developed leaf yellowing disease (BLB) in Raninagar, Paril, Kaligram, Baragachha and Ekdala unions. All the rice in the field is dying within 5 to 8 days of the yellowing of the leaves. Every day, new fields are being affected by this disease. Among the affected rice varieties are Swarna, BR-49 and Katari Bhog. Farmers are able to protect their rice fields by taking advice from the Agriculture Department and local pesticide vendors.
The farmers of the upazila's source of income is paddy. They pay country email list all their household expenses with the money they earn from paddy. The farmers are worried about their families due to the appearance of the paddy leaf curl disease. In Raninagar, the leaves of Aman paddy have turned yellow and the paddy has died, so hundreds of farmers have recently planted new paddy in the affected land. This has led to additional expenses for them.
Farmers are unable to protect their paddy in any way as the leaves of Aman paddy trees have turned yellow and died in 5 out of 8 unions of Raninagar Upazila. Farmers have sought advice and instructions from the uplift authority to protect their paddy.
Md. Dulal Hossain, a farmer from Singarpara village, said, "I have planted Aman rice on 7 bighas of land. The rice leaves on my two and a half bighas of land have turned yellow due to leaf curl disease. I am unable to save the rice in the field after taking advice from the Agriculture Department and local pesticide sellers. I have to plant rice again in the land. This has caused us to incur additional expenses. More farmers like me are lost. He has sought advice and instructions from the uplift authority to save them from losses."
In this regard, Raninagar Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Shahidul Islam said, the leaves of the paddy plants in some areas of the land had turned yellow due to the Aman paddy planted in the upazila. On the advice of the Agriculture Department, the affected paddy plants have returned to normal. The Agriculture Department is advising farmers to bring the affected paddy plants back to normal.
