When you hear the word "web browser", you probably think first and foremost of Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge. But there is another browser that deserves attention: the Norwegian Opera browser, whose Windows version we looked at for this article. The first version was released in 1995. At that time, the browser, like most of its competitors, was still subject to a fee. But that hasn't been the case for a long time. In March 2020, it was used by 4.29% of all users in Germany - and over the last ten years its market share has been relatively stable at this level.
It is actually surprising that its market share is not higher given its wide range of functions. It may be primarily aimed at professional users, although the browser is also well suited for occasional users. For example, it contains a built-in VPN function ("Virtual Private Network") that can be used to conceal your own IP address. If you use another browser, you often need additional, paid software to be able to use a VPN. If you do not want to see advertisements or be tracked by tracking tools, you can activate the built-in ad blocker or tracking blocker.
On the left side there is a bar that allows rcs data japan you to access Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram at the touch of a button. Most users use these services primarily on their smartphones. Thanks to the successful integration into the Opera browser, using them on the PC works just as well, if not better, because a real keyboard is a big advantage when writing messages.
A click on the symbol of the relevant service is enough to quickly check whether new messages or Instagram posts have come in. When you open the browser, a tab with an overview appears first. You can set the background image yourself and save frequently visited websites as tiles. One click is then all it takes to open the desired page. This is particularly useful if you don't want to spend a long time searching. There is also a Google search field on this overview page. You can type in search queries without having to go to google.de.
There is also good news for web designers: Opera has been using the Chromium engine for rendering websites for years. The same engine is also used in Google Chrome and, more recently, in Microsoft Edge. A major advantage of this is that websites no longer have to be adapted for many different browsers, as was previously the case. Users benefit from a correct and uniform display of the websites they visit. The Opera browser is available for Windows, MacOS and Linux, but also for Android and iOS. If you have a slow internet connection or use an overloaded public hotspot, the turbo function built in here is a good option.
