IDEF Kit Cycle When a document is created, the material written or collected by the author is distributed as a standard Set to commentators, reviewers, and other readers. Commentators return the Set to the author, who responds to the comments and may use the comments to revise or expand the material. The Set is returned to the commentator along with the author's responses. Readers may also return comments to the author, but they are not required to do so. This process is called the Set Cycle (Figure C1).

During the specified response time, the commentator reviews the Set and writes comments directly on the copy as reader notes, in red if possible. The Set is returned to the author. The author may agree with a comment by checking it and marking it on his working copy, and include it in the next version of the model. In case of disagreement, the author writes a reply note, appended to the reader's note (without a new note number). The reader reviews the author's responses and, if satisfied, archives the set. (Comments on Sets are always retained by the reader.
