The primary objectives of this standard are: a. To provide a modeling technique that is independent of, but can be used in conjunction with, computer-aided software engineering (CASE) methods or tools; c. To provide a modeling technique that has the following characteristics: — General purpose (to analyse systems of varying purpose, scope, and complexity); — Specific and precise (to produce relevant, usable models); — Concise and concise (to facilitate understanding, communication, agreement, and verification); — Conceptual (to represent functional requirements rather than physical or organizational options); — Flexible (to support multiple stages of the project life cycle).

The use of this standard is strongly recommended when projects require: a. the use of modeling techniques for the analysis, development, reengineering, integration, or acquisition of information systems; b. the inclusion of a system or enterprise modeling method in a business process analysis or software development methodology. The specifications of this standard apply when system or enterprise modeling methods are used: a. in projects requiring IDEF0 as a modeling method; b. in the development of automated software tools implementing the IDEF0 modeling methodology. The specifications of this standard do not apply to projects that require the use of function modeling methods other than IDEF0.
