Social media has given visual storytelling a major boost: The rise of Instagram and TikTok, not least, demonstrates that images and videos are more popular with users. This is no surprise: social media has always been about "small bites" that can be consumed on the fly. Images and videos make it even easier for users to quickly absorb content: Instead of scrolling through a desert of text, as X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook still sometimes are, the Instagram timeline is much more engaging thanks to the photos and video stills. The short videos on TikTok have transferred the trend toward quickly consumed images to videos.

Tools for visual storytelling
With Instagram’s “requirement” that every post must have an image, various tools have become established.

Canva
The most well-known tool for image creation is Canva. Even with a free account, it offers numerous options for creating images for Instagram and other social media platforms. Canva is available as an app and a desktop version.

There are both plain text templates and templates with photos and text elements. Social media managers can also upload their own images and edit them with Canva—for example, adding text.
Canva now also offers templates for animated social media posts and videos that can be edited with a simple editor. A music library also provides the perfect audio accompaniment.
